Week 19

  • Check the examples (required) from previous students' works about evaluating research publications, synthesizing the sources, and comparing or contrasting the literature.
  • Read “Writing A Literature Review and Using a Synthesis Matrix” (supplementary).
  • Use a Synthesis Matrix to capture the key features and to critically evaluate your selected literature, as well as identify the two to four major themes in your sources.
  • Locate more literature (if necessary) so that you are able to compare and contrast these under the two to four different themes as explained in the class notes. Update these to your Bibliography.
  • From the evaluation of the literature, check the accuracy of your assumption by noting the similarities and differences within the literature - include this into your Research Essay’s Section 4.
  • Reflect on the 2 principles of Kaupapa Māori research in your Action Plan
  • Join conversations surrounding topics of interest, or areas of focus or themes across the literature, which are relevant to your Research Essay, in the July 2018 Intake’s Google+ community.
Research questions
  • Are there clearly stated research questions?
  • Does the article explain why the topic is important?
  • Is the research design and methodology described? Does it seem appropriate for the area of study?
  • What is the data analysis like? Are the results clearly explained?
  • What are the conclusions? Are they a reasonable reflection of the data analysis?
